Fair dispute resolution without court.
STASKAL MEDIATION AND ARBITRATION
Enabling fair and final resolution of disputes outside of court.
Whether it is facilitating compromise and agreement or offering a less expensive and faster alternative to traditional trials, my 38+ years of experience as a judge and lawyer have given me the knowledge and skills to get disputes settled fairly.
ABOUT ME
Honorable Douglas F. Staskal (Retired)
After graduating from the University of Iowa law school in 1979 with High Distinction, I joined the Iowa Department of Justice working as a prosecutor in the Criminal Appeals and Area Prosecutions Divisions.
In 1986 I joined the Brick Gentry Law Firm in Des Moines practicing in all areas of general civil practice, focused on litigation.
I was appointed to the bench in Polk County in 1996 and retired in 2018 after 22 years of service.
In my years on the bench I presided over cases involving every area of civil litigation including employment, personal injury, professional negligence, business and family law.
WHAT I DO
Mediation is the process of facilitating the settlement of disputes through negotiation, compromise and agreement.
I bring a calm, rational and knowledgeable approach to guiding settlement negotiations. Importantly, my knowledge and experience give me credibility when parties need advice about the risks of litigation or the reasonableness of settlement positions.
Some disputes can't be settled by agreement. In that case, arbitration is an alternative to a trial in court. Arbitration can be conducted with as much or as little procedural formality as the parties choose. It will usually be faster and less expensive than court. The decisions I make will be of as high a quality as were the decisions I made as a judge.
